LTAC Notes--February 12 2009

Southern Cayuga, Union Springs, Jordan-Elbridge, Weedsport, Auburn, Cato-Meridian, Port Byron and CNYRIC were represented.

Technology plans for most districts expire in June 2010. Those districts will need to have draft done by January 2010 for e-rate purposes. Approval of final plans will take place in the spring of 2010. CNYRIC maintains a site of approved plans.

Telephone interconnect and e-rate services have all been transferred to OCM BOCES. Final requests now reflect the charges for this service. Districts will no longer be purchasing this service from us.

Novanet update--Port Byron had a training this week. JE, Union Springs and BOCES are using it now. Auburn is working with Apple to install it. Moravia, Southern Cayuga and Cato-Meridian are looking into using it. Districts must purchase at least 4 ports.

CNYRIC Update--Rick reported
  1. e-mail archiving is in test mode now and will be a service in a few months
  2. there is now a pilot project for IP based security cameras with archived video at the RIC
  3. they are piloting ethernet based energy management system
  4. the codian bridge is being tested and will be used for the CSAC meeting tomorrow. Up to 20 connections are possible.
  5. Negotiations are underway to significantly lower the cost of additional bandwidth effective July 1.
  6. Project deadlines for this year are March 4 initiation of projects; April 9 final draft to districts; April 24 project signed off by district business official and Dave Boyle
  7. They are looking at the possibility of placing a caching server at the BOCES for districts. This could cut down significantly on bandwidth needs
Distance Learning/Videoconferencing--the co-ser has been reworked and traditional distance learning classes are no longer part of the service. Videoconferencing coordination and maintenance of videoconferencing equipment are now the co-ser. Districts may keep the rooms intact, but there will be no room rental (this is a change from this morning). The Tut codecs can still be used if desired.

School Library System--Harry Chan will be presenting a workshop for experienced users of OPALS on March 4. There will be training for new users later. Novel NY has changed the databases that will be offered beginning April 1. Librarians have been notified of the changes.

EdVideo Online (PowerMediaPlus) has been renewed until July 2010 for upstate. The NYC and LI stations have dropped it in favor of Teachers Domain/VITAL NY.

Next meeting is scheduled for March 19 at 10 AM in the DL room.
